Dr. Tobin first tried Longlife for Dogs eight years ago, after he received a sample of the product in the mail. organic flax seeds We at Longlife have recently introduced our new Canine Skin Supplement, made from high-grade organic flax seed, to treat skin disorders specifically. We also have a similar product in development for felines. Omega-3 fatty acids help establish a healthy lipid barrier in the skin, which blocks infection and irritation. In dogs and cats that are deficient in fatty acids, the skin is often flaky and the coat is coarse. Dr. Tobin comments, "We've had very good success with omega-3 fatty acids, which are found primarily in flax seed oil and fish oil."

In dogs, easily digestible forms of omega-3 fatty acids have been correlated with higher levels of activity, healthier coats and skin, and strengthened resistance to disease. Cats, which are unable to convert the fatty acids in plants to a usable form, have to get almost all their nutrients from animal sources. Fish oil is the ideal source of these fatty acids for cats.

"Nutrition is the basis of health care, and it's greatly underutilized," says Dr. Tobin. "Most pet foods do not provide the nutrients that animals need." For both dogs and cats, Dr. Tobin favors a homemade diet of raw meat and bone, which most closely approximates the diet that an animal would consume in the wild.
